Lessons

I look forward to meeting you and helping you learn the skills you need to play almost any kind of music you dream about. During the pandemic, if you are vaccinated, I can give you lessons at my studio in South Amherst, or in your home. I also give lessons online, or outdoors.
For your child age 4 – 8, I like to use the Suzuki approach which applies the natural process of language learning to music – first listen, then play by ear, read, and write. Here’s a link to get you started learning about the Suzuki approach: https://internationalsuzuki.org/method.htm

Testimonials

Amy embraces and encourages students of all ages and abilities, through an individualized teaching approach that she has refined over a lifelong career that spans 40 plus years.
“Our son started taking lessons with Amy when he was only 4 ½ years old and three years later is still thriving under her instruction.  She encourages his creativity while providing structured musical instruction.  Learning by ear has allowed him to play more complicated compositions from an early age and enhanced his enjoyment of piano.  Amy continues to weave in musical theory knowledge and practice and learning techniques as he has progressed in his lessons with her.  We look forward to many more years of musical instruction with Amy!”

“I am a senior citizen and I wanted to learn to play a musical instrument while I was still able. I found Amy Rose and found her patient, flexible and imaginative approach to teaching very encouraging. Best of all she teamed me up with one of her other senior students and we have played music together with Amy and on our own. Great learning and great fun. “

“I am an old lady, almost 80 years old, and have played the piano off and on through my adult life working and raising children with not ever enough time to practice. Five years ago, time came into my life and I looked for a piano teacher in the area. While reading their bios, I realized that I might be a “difficult” student, in that I was too old and cranky to want to strive for perfection, play in recitals, learn to use my fingers in just the right way. Thankfully, I stumbled on Amy who is able to teach me within the way I think. She listens to what I want to achieve and helps me do it. And, who would believe this, but, she connected me with another wonderful older student of hers so that we can play music together, the three of us, he on the recorder, me on the piano and Amy on the flute. Playing like this, even on Face Time,  we can hear the sounds that we make together, and no matter how simple the melodies, they are beautiful. Now that’s Music.”

“Amy was Henry’s piano teacher for eleven years, from second grade through high school.  I really appreciated her teaching style–gentle, and very targeted.  She guided him through several Suzuki books, but also encouraged him to take on additional songs of his choice.  She also gave him a good foundation in theory and improv.  Even though Henry’s high school schedule became quite busy, he enjoyed his lessons with Amy so much that he wouldn’t give them up.”

“I had lessons with Amy Rose 2nd through 12th grade and loved my time with her. We worked through many Suzuki books and chord charts, but also many songs of my own choosing. Amy was always flexible to fit lessons into my busy highschool schedule. I continue to appreciate her teaching today, having the skills to play music I like In my free time by ear and from sheets.”
